5 Different Types of Yogurt – How Do You Differ?
Roughly there is stir-yogurt and stand-yogurt. Stirred yogurt is smoothly stirred before it enters the package. Standy yogurt ripens in the package, it is thick and cannot be poured. Greek and Turkish yogurt are examples of this.
There are five different types of Yogurt. Here’s how you can differ;
Greek yogurt
This is just like the well-known hangop ‘hung’, making the yogurt creamier than the normal yogurt from a pack. Turkish yogurt resembles the Greek, but is slightly less creamy. The Greek yogurt is especially delicious with fruit, nuts and honey.
Full Greek yogurt usually contains more fat and calories than regular full yogurt. Cream has been added to Greek yogurt. A low-fat yogurt dish contains 56 calories, a Greek yogurt dish provides 188 calories. That is more than 3 times as much. The fat in yogurt consists of more than 60% saturated fat.
Fruit yogurt
You can try all kinds of flavors of yogurt today. From full to lean, but also all kinds of tasty and colorful flavors. There are of course many different flavors of yogurt with fruit, such as strawberry yogurt, blueberry yogurt and peach yogurt. I used to like the latter very much. Fruit yogurt is often colored by the juice from the fruit. Mostly, there’s 0% artificial color.
Bulgarian yogurt
Bulgarian yogurt is a bit thicker and made from thickened milk and skimmed milk powder. It contains a relatively high amount of saturated fat. It is even fatter than regular full-bodied yogurt. Only the variants with less than 1.1 grams of saturated fat per 100 grams are in the disk of five. Kefir contains less fat and calories than Bulgarian yogurt therefore, this is called more healthy. You can get the most health benefits from Bulgarian yogurt. In addition to lactic acid bacteria, yeast is added to kefir. It contains some carbon dioxide. That’s why it stings a little.
Goat yogurt
Goat yogurt is made from goat milk and contains about the same amount of fat, protein and carbohydrates as whole yogurt made from cow’s milk. Because goat yogurt contains more than 1.1 grams of saturated fat per 100 grams.
Turkish Yogurt
Finally, seems to be used more as a collective term for different types of yogurt. One Turkish yogurt is not the other: some are just as fat as Greek yogurt, others are only three percent fat. When you buy Turkish yogurt, you should always take a good look at what you are getting.
Which yogurt is healthy?
In the supermarket you can choose from many types of yogurt, such as low-fat, semi-skimmed, full-fat, Greek and Bulgarian yogurt, fruit yogurt and cottage cheese.
For your health, it is best to choose low-fat or semi-skimmed yogurt, and then the ‘natural’ variant without added sugar.
Yogurt contains many good nutrients, including protein, calcium and vitamins B12 and B2. Eating and drinking dairy products is associated with a lower risk of colon cancer and type 2 diabetes.
