Miscarriage or abortion can be a very painful experience in a woman’s life. It is emotionally hurting and physically exhausting. Many times a feeling of guilt will take a toll on woman’s health.

Post abortion, one needs to be very careful in her diet. This will help her recover back soon. Eating the right kinds of foods will help expedite recovery process. Heavy bleeding followed by abortion will reduce iron and vitamin B12, B9 and B2, or riboflavin levels in the body. Doctors usually advise on certain medication to be taken.

Diet to be followed after Abortion

1. Dairy

Low-fat dairy products will satisfy most of the dietary needs from a terminated pregnancy. Increasing intakes of vitamin D is also crucial for calcium absorption. 2-3 one-cup servings of milk will help you get necessary calcium and vitamins.

2. Water

Excessive sweating is very common post abortion. So, you must have at least 8-12 glasses of water daily. This will prevent problems related to dehydration and constipation.

3. Chicken / Eggs

Protein rich food is very helpful in recovering after an abortion. Have chicken or eggs at least in two meals.

4. Iron Rich Foods

A miscarriage or abortion causes heavy bleeding resulting in depletion of iron in body. You may even experience anemia and related symptoms due to your miscarriage. Fatigue and weakness are common after a miscarriage. Consumption of iron-rich foods after a pregnancy loss is recommended by health experts to fight off the problem.

Heme-iron is known to be the best type of iron to consume after abortion. The iron is easily absorbed by the body. Red meat is the best source of heme-iron. Hence, it really helps to consume red meat in plenty post a miscarriage. But remember to cook it well. Avoid frying it. You can grill it instead. Other sources include raisins, beans, green leafy vegetables, lentils, pumpkin seeds, soybeans, dark chocolate, molasses, etc.

Apart from consuming these iron-rich foods, Consuming Vitamin C rich foods are also very important for better absorption of iron by the body. Some of the best sources include strawberries, papaya, and grapefruits.

5. Calcium Rich Nutrients

Calcium levels can go berserk during pregnancy. These tend to drop drastically. Hence, you need to supplement body with ample amount of calcium by consuming foods rich in calcium such as milk, dairy products, salmon, dried fruits, dark green leafy veggies, and sardines.

6. Feel-Good Foods

Most women tend to get into severe depression after a period of mourning baby loss. Additionally, it isn’t easy to make peace with the loss of dreams and hopes. Level of depression may vary among women. Some are capable of bouncing back sooner while others take pretty long time. Consuming the following comfort foods will help deal with post-miscarriage depression.

  •  Nuts
  • Beans
  • Plain chocolate

Magnesium will help you not deal with depression and helps body’s energy production. It improves cell repair as well as nerve and muscle functions.

7. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

It is important to consume good amount of fresh fruits and vegetables. This will help you to get the essential nutrients your body requires after a pregnancy loss.

Following the above mentioned diet and foods to eat after abortion will help you recover the body sooner. Rest is very important to prevent back pain problems. Working in cold water should be minimized as far as possible. Remember the body needs ample rest to sort itself out. So be as gentle and caring on yourself as possible. Rushing back to work right away is not recommended. Work can wait!
