The ketogenic diet has been relevant for a really long time but it recently garnered a lot of attention since many celebrities started vouching for its success.

The Principle:

The basic concept of the ketogenic diet is simple: eat minimal carbohydrates and consume ample fats and proteins throughout the day. When your instant energy source, that is carbs, are exhausted really fast, your body has no choice to turn to except fat for energy release. Proteins are a vital component of the diet so that people don’t use essential muscle mass and do not accumulate ketone bodies either.

So here are some of the main advantages of trying out this diet:

Weight Loss

The biggest advantage of the keto diet is weight loss. If your problem is excessive body weight, this diet is surely for you since it will help you drop pounds like anything!

People see guaranteed results within weeks and even the most morbidly obese people have reduced themselves to a normal body weight with a toned figure with the help of this diet.

This is because our fat stores are the only energy source being exhausted in the duration of the diet. These fat stores are the reason for our bloated figure so losing those means losing all the extra baggage we have been carrying!

Energy Release

If you have studied eighth-grade science you probably know that fats are a much more potent source of energy than carbs. So when you stop burning carbs and burn fat instead, you get a boost of energy. You can utilize this energy in a workout to stay more fit and healthy. You can even try your hand at a sport and build up your stamina!

Optimize Blood Sugar

Sugar levels in your blood shoot up when you eat excessive carbohydrates. In a ketogenic diet, you forgo carbohydrates entirely so your blood sugar has no chance of shooting up. This is great in many ways.

Firstly, when you don’t eat enough carbs, your body starts making its own sugar with the stores of fat in your body. This helps maintain your blood sugar so it doesn’t get low. It also breaks down the stores of fat in your body to make sugar from.

Secondly, if you are at a risk of diabetes, the insulin production system gets to take a much-needed break so when you end the diet, it can start working optimally again.

Induce Alertness

The extra energy that is released in your body is not only good for use in physical tasks, it also boosts your mental alertness so you start thinking clearly and making rational decisions as well.

When we have a lot of fat in our body, our mental alertness goes down. This puts us at risk for a lot of diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia. But studies have shown that when people who are at a risk for this disease try a ketogenic diet, their mind clears up and they start thinking clearly again.

The studies have therefore formed a link between the production of ketone bodies and the level of positive brain function.

Eliminate Toxins from the Body

Along with the many deposits of fat in our body, there lay many toxins. These toxins have probably been accumulating for all the years you have had this body fat. Even if they don’t cause a direct disease, they gradually take you towards a condition of perpetual illness.
So when you burn out the fat in these deposits, you naturally also get rid of these toxins.

Suppresses Appetite

No matter how many carbs you eat, they leave you feeling hungry after a very short while. This is because after you have utilized all the energy you needed, it is stored away as fat.

Eating lots of fat actually stops you from being hungry for a long time. You feel less ravenous and you naturally eat a lot less as well.

Prevents Diseases

Other than Alzheimer’s and Dementia, there are a number of other diseases that could be prevented or suppressed with this diet. This includes heart diseases, diabetes, and hypertension. Doctors have been known to put children with epilepsy on ketogenic diets to reduce the occurrences of seizures as well.

So, add some cheese, cream and milk to your grocery list and treat your taste buds while shedding some pounds!
